Matthew 8:26 And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, you of little faith?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a dead calm.
Jesus had fallen asleep in the boat while he and the disciples were on a little pleasure cruise across the Sea of Galilee. And then a major storm rose up; so severe that the disciples thought they were going to die. And they rushed Jesus to wake him up so he could help them - do what, I'm not sure - were they expecting him to grab a bucket or tighten up the sails?
I'd heard this story hundreds of times, preached on it several. And then a few years ago I heard a sermon that changed the way I thought about it. The upshot - Jesus was sleeping because he wasn't worried. You can't sleep when you're worried. And so, our prayer should be - Lord, let me fall asleep at the tiller with you. That's my prayer - Lord, let me sleep. Let me sleep knowing that everything's going to be OK. You got this.
In Christ,
Pastor Seth
