Matthew 15:32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.’
I feel like it's redundant for Jesus to say "I have compassion for the crowd." I mean, if anybody is going to have compassion for a crowd, it's Jesus right? He doesn't really have to say it. We know he has compassion for the crowd.
Sometimes I find it helpful to think about Jesus in other contexts - the jarring out of the ordinary and comfortable can help us to see Jesus with fresh eyes. So what if Jesus were a political candidate riding around on a tour bus to town after town? I think "I have compassion for the crowd" might be his tagline: his "I like Ike," his "Yes we can." It defines who Jesus is - Jesus is the One who has compassion for all the people. Jesus is the One who has compassion for you and I.
In Christ,
Pastor Seth
