1 Timothy 6:17-19
17As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, 19thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
I struggle when the scripture passages come around that say, “Blessed are the poor” or “It is easier for a camel to fit through an eye of a needle than a rich person to get into heaven” or even “Go, sell all that you have.” It’s not that I don’t value theses scripture passages, or even see the comfort they can bring. But I struggle because of the truth that tells me that because by all global standards, we are rich – regardless of what our bank accounts tell us.
Verses like these provide gracious words for all – whether you consider yourself rich with money, or rich with the gift of time or hospitality or kindness. Do good. Be rich in good works. Be generous. Be ready to share.
Peace,Pastor Jenn
